I’m thinking about whether to go freelance. I’m planning to sit down with a pad of paper this weekend and try to think of all the pros and cons. But I’m sure there’ll be things I haven’t thought of. What do you like the most and the least about being freelancing?

I’m Will Steer. I’ve been working as a freelance editor, colourist and animator for the last four years. I run Good Hustle Films.

I like being able to have more money available when I know I’m going to have an expensive month. In a job you can’t say “can I have a higher salary this month and have a lower salary next month?” Whereas as freelancers, we have this advantage of being able to control our own salary. When I’m working, I send myself a smaller wage. I’m too busy working to have much fun anyway, so I send myself a bit less money. But then every August, for example, I know that I’m not going to get as much work, and there’ll be at least a couple of festivals that I’ll want to go to, so I send a slightly higher wage from my business to my personal account.
